Poetry

As a teenager in the 1970’s, I heard BBC personality, Pam Ayres, on a local Victoria radio station recite her poem “The Embarrassing Experience With a Parrot”. I laughed and had to buy her book, Some of Me Poetry. That was the spark that hooked me onto poetry. But it wasn’t a flame until 2006, when I embarked on my poetry journey.

Since then, I have studied poetry at UVic while earning my BA in writing. Poetry has become a passion. I love its relative distilled brevity in comparison to other genres of writing, plus the many elements that make a poem a poem. Word choice and placement matter – they can chime and make a poem sing!

I now have two poetry collection manuscripts finished.

My first collection of poems honours animals in their many situations in our vast world, both difficult and happy. Many of these poems have been cathartic for me to write and I want to share what I’ve learned.

My second collection is a mixed bag of poems on the many aspects of daily life , the ups and the downs, and the humour. Some poems are about nature. Having lost my vision over several decades from a degenerative eye disorder, retinitis pigmentosa (RP), some of my poems in this collection are about blindness.

Both collections have poems that are informative and meaningful – and some are in plain fun.

My wish now is to find a publisher for these two poetry collections. Fingers and toes crossed for luck! I’ll keep you posted.

Thank you, Doris
